SEAN O’CARROLL - DIRECTOR/THERAPIST

Sean Portrait BW-1.jpg

Sean has been studying and exploring human consciousness for over 25 years. His (2004) BA Hons in philosophy (phenomenological inquiry) explored the relationship between science, subjectivity and the sacred. He trained as a gestalt psychotherapist in 2013/14 and has trained in a number of other psychotherapeutic modalities since 2011. Sean has worked as a psychotherapist and academic - lecturing in transpersonal psychology, psychotherapy, and eco-psychotherapy - for over ten years. In 2017 he completed three years of qualitative research, culminating in his MA (research) thesis entitled "An Inquiry Into the Experience of Being Alone with Nature". He is a Dancing Freedom instructor (conscious dance), and has a longstanding interest in "shamanic" studies and ceremony.

Sean O'Carroll currently leads the psychotherapy team at the Monash University Psychedelics Lab in Melbourne, Australia. He is also lead psychotherapist and trainer for the Swinburne University psychedelic trial exploring the use of psilocybin for TRD. He does consulting work (training and supervision) for a number of other psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy research trial teams. He has completed the MAPS training in MDMA for PTSD, and is currently working on three PAP research trials: Psilo-GAD, Psilo-TRD, and MDMA-PTSD.

Sean is the founder and direct of the Wild Mind Institute (2014), which delivers training in Psychotherapy, Eco-Psychotherapy, "Bad Trip" Integration, and - selectively - Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

“I work in a dynamic and collaborative way, offering a very focussed and effective style of therapy. Working together, we will aim to get straight to the heart of the matter, and begin the process of genuine change.

I have a background in philosophy, transpersonal psychology, and a number of psychotherapeutic modalities including relational gestalt therapy, creative arts therapy, and internal family systems (IFS). I have been practicing as a psychotherapist for over twelve years. I am a psychotherapist, not a psychologist, and I do not work within the medical model. This means that I do not always think in terms of mental illness, and I do not prescribe medications. My approach is grounded in depth psychology, deep listening and genuine engagement with you and your experience. I have successfully helped hundreds of clients improve their relationships, become unstuck, gain clarity, and live more wholehearted and fulfilling lives.

My work is informed by gestalt relational therapy, transpersonal psychology, internal family systems (IFS), intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), integrative psychotherapy, existential psychotherapy, art therapy, psychedelic psychotherapy, and eco-psychotherapy. I have a longstanding personal interest in eco-psychology - the relationship between the mind and the natural world - and this informs my work with clients. I have also worked quite extensively with members of the psychedelic community in Melbourne, exploring and integrating their non-ordinary state experiences.
