About me

My name is Sean O’Carroll. What follows is a little bit about me, my training background, my interests, and how I work. For further information you could also check out this Q&A from 2017, and read my blog. If you are interested in working with me, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions or queries.

How I Work

I work in a dynamic and collaborative way, offering a very focussed and effective style of therapy. Working together, we will aim to get straight to the heart of the matter, and begin the process of genuine change.

I have a background in philosophy, transpersonal psychology, and a number of psychotherapeutic modalities including relational gestalt therapy and creative arts therapy. I have been teaching and training psychotherapists since 2011, and am the director of Wild Mind. My MA research thesis (2014 – 2017) involved a phenomenological exploration into the experience of being alone with nature, and in 2018 I developed and delivered Australia’s first tertiary level course in eco-psychotherapy to training therapists.

I have been practicing as a psychotherapist for nearly ten years. I am a psychotherapist, not a psychologist, and I do not work within the medical model. This means that I do not always think in terms of mental illness, and I do not prescribe medications. My approach is grounded in depth psychology, deep listening and genuine engagement with you and your experience. I have successfully helped hundreds of clients improve their relationships, become unstuck, gain clarity, and live more wholehearted and fulfilling lives.

My work is informed by gestalt relational therapy, transpersonal psychology, integrative psychotherapy, existential psychotherapy, art therapy, and eco-psychotherapy. I have a longstanding personal interest in eco-psychology - the relationship between the mind and the natural world - and this informs my work with clients. I have also worked quite extensively with members of the psychedelic community in Melbourne, exploring and integrating their non-ordinary state experiences.

I meet new clients for an initial 100 minute session in which I hear about you and your life and get a sense for what you want from therapy. During this session you will also experience how I work. At the conclusion of that first session we will identify the key themes informing our work together and map out a plan going forward.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
